TEMPERMENT TEST PROTOCOL
Dog Designs by Dana is attempting to create a recreation area where all the members and their dogs are able to enjoy themeselves. To do this, we will be very selective as to the dogs we will allow in the Park. The grade your dog receives is based on our observation of their reaction in a controlled setting. These grades are NOT a judgement about the worth of you dog, just an assesment of your dogs temperment and on how well they can interact with other dogs. This does not mean you have a bad dog, however we do have the right to refuse admission to any dog who fails this test.
DOG -TO -HUMAN AGGRESSION TEST
GREETING: The dog to be tested is brought into the room by its owner to where the "tester" is standing. The "tester" leans forward slightly, holds out their hand and calls the dog to them.The dog's reaction is graded as follows:
____A. Dog's eyes are averted, tail wagging, ears back, relaxed.
____B. Eyes averted, ears back, tail down, non-motion, no eye contact.
____C. Dog jumps on handler, can not conduct the test.
____D. Dog holds eye contact while remaining motionless with ears forward.
____F. Dog Growls or tries to bite handler.
HANDLING: The "tester", after greeting the dog, proceeds to handle the dog in a manner that may surprise the dog, including excessive petting, holding (but not pulling) his tail, picking up feet, and physically moving the dog. The "tester" will not cause the dog any pain. The dog's reaction is graded as follows:
____A. Dog accepts or wiggles around with tail wagging and ears back.
____B. Dog accepts handling quietly, no wagging.
____C. Dog attempts to avoid handling, tail down, not wagging.
____D. Eyes fixed, stiff tail, ears erect.
____F. Avoids handling, raised hackles, growls or attempts to bite.
OBJECT POSSESSION: We will ask the handler if the dog has ever shown signs of this behavior. If the dog has not shown this behavior, the "tester" will give the dog a toy. He/She will then ask for him to release the toy. If the dog refuses, the "tester" will attempt to take the toy. The dog's reaction will be graded as follows:
____A. Dog allows the handler to remove the toy or drops it with a wagging tail.
____B. Dog holds the toy wanting to tug-o-war.
____C Dog pays no attention to the handler.
____D. Dog snaps to get control of toy.
____F. Dog Growls ir attempts to bite handler.
DOG-TO-DOG AGGRESSION TEST
GREETING: The dog will be brought in by its owner to a room where a "tester" dog is waiting. The applicant dog will be allowed to approach the "tester" dog with it's owner. The dog's reaction will be graded as follows:
____A. Dog approches playful and submissive, ears back, wagging tail.
____B. Dog does not approach the "tester" dog.
____C. Dog approaches the "tester"dog with dominate posture.
____D. Dog rushes "tester" dog, ears erect.
____F. Dog charges while growling or attempting to bite the "tester" dog.
INTERACTION: The Applicant dog will be introduced to a group of friendly dogs. The dog will interact (off-leash) for 5 minutes.The dog's reaction will be graded as follows:
____A. Dog greets and plays with "tester" dogs in a friendly manner.
____B. Dog greets, yet later ignores group of dogs.
____C. Dog greets, yet appears somewhat nervous, tail tucked.
____D. Dog attempts to mount "tester dogs" with authority.
____F. Dog growls, hackles raised, attempting to bite.
OBJECT POSSESSION: The Applicant dog will be given a toy, then asked to interact with a group of "tester" dogs for 5 minutes. The dog's reaction will be graded as follows:
____A. Dog plays with or surrenders toy to "tester" dogs.
____B. Dog runs with toy, yet with submission.
____C. Dog stands stiff with toy, tail down, wagging,
____D. Dog snaps at "tester" dogs, yet not making contact.
____F. Dog attempts to attack or bite "tester" dogs when approached.
TREAT MANNERS: The Applicant dog will be in a group of friendly dogs. The human "tester" will then offer treats to the dogs, including the applicant dog, one by one. The Applicant dog's reaction will be graded as follows:
____A. Dog happily takes treat in a non aggressive manner.
____B. Dog greedely takes treat, yet non aggressive.
____C. Dog not interested, yet stays in the pack.
____D. Dog hog's the treats and overpowers "tester" dogs.
____F. Dog Growls or tries to attack "tester" dogs when treats are given out.
